How Long Does a Kitchen Remodel Take?

Are you considering remodeling your kitchen but you're wondering about how long the whole process is really going to take? You are not alone and the short answer is it really depends on the scope of work meaning the size of your project and your contractor.

A small remodel job could take anywhere from 2-4 weeks. This size job is more cosmetic and includes things like painting existing cabinetry, adding a backsplash, changing out light fixtures and updating cabinet hardware.

A medium size remodel job could take anywhere from 4-8 weeks working with the footprint you already have in place. This size job includes new cabinets, countertops, backsplash, plumbing fixtures, appliances, lighting, hardware and possibly flooring.

A large size remodel job could take anywhere from 12-20 weeks depending on the scope. Some large remodels take up to a year to complete. A remodel of this type includes demolishing the kitchen down to the studs, moving walls, doorways and maybe windows, then rebuilding and installing a brand new kitchen.

When considering a kitchen remodel, you also want to factor in the pre-construction phase which includes all of the planning for your project. Give yourself plenty of time so you don't feel stressed and overwhelmed with decision fatigue. Consider hiring a professional designer to assist you with your selections and expedite the process. Also factor in the time it will take to interview and decide on the right contractor for your job. All in all, the entire kitchen planning, interviewing and finally construction phase may take up to a year. It's a big commitment and you want to do it right!

Here are a few tips to help your kitchen remodel go as smoothly and efficiently as possible:

  • Discuss an estimated timeline with your contractor before starting the project

  • Clearly communicate and share all of your design selections with your contractor

  • Have all of your materials ordered as early as possible and best if it's BEFORE demo starts
