You may have seen the kitchen remodel post from last week where I blogged about remodeling the entire room around existing cabinetry. In case you missed it, here it is . Well this little laundry room was also TRANSFORMED in the process and sits right off the kitchen. The story is similar in that we wanted to reuse the existing cabinetry by having it professionally repainted and making some modifications. This room is heavily used and is the main pathway for the family and dog from the garage into the house. The design challenges were as follows: high traffic volume, no where to hang fresh laundry, lack of storage, fluorescent lighting and the paint color did not match the new kitchen. Because of the heavy traffic, using durable wall materials that withstood kids, book bags, a large dog, and not to mention laundry loads was all important.

After meeting with the homeowner, identifying the design challenges and measuring the space, I created the following design plans. Note there are some fun red cabinets in another part of the home that sit against light blue walls. We considered emulating this look in the laundry room (see cabinet elevation and 3D rendering) but we wound up going in a whole different direction as you will see!
Instead of accenting the cabinets in a bold color, we went with beadboard on the lower half of the walls and a wallpaper pattern above. These materials are much more durable than sheetrock and you know I love a FUN wallpaper pattern! We painted the laundry room cabinets a light gray color, the same color as the kitchen island to tie the two rooms together. And here it is, a stunning new and improved laundry room that works beautifully with the rest of the house. Can you believe it?!
