The Truth About Reverse Osmosis Water — What Every Homeowner Needs to Know

Let’s talk about something we all use every single day: water.

If you’ve ever turned on the tap and thought, “Hmm… why does my water taste different?” or worried about what might actually be in it, you’re not alone. More and more of my clients are asking me to include Reverse Osmosis systems in their kitchen designs — and for good reason.

What Is Reverse Osmosis, Anyway?

Reverse Osmosis (or “RO” for short) sounds fancy, but here’s the deal: it’s just pushing water through a super-fine filter — like a microscopic net that catches almost everything you don’t want in your drinking water.

Chlorine? Gone.

Sediment? Gone.

Weird metallic taste? See ya.

What comes out is fresh, clean, and perfect for drinking, cooking, and even brewing better-tasting coffee (yes, your morning latte will thank you!).

Why Homeowners Are Talking About It

I think one of the reasons we’re seeing such a rise in demand is because of growing awareness around water quality. You may have heard of PFAS — the forever chemicals showing up in local water supplies across the country. And while your city water might technically meet safety standards, those standards don’t catch everything. Add in old pipes that can leach lead or rust, and it makes sense why so many families want an extra layer of protection.

Think of an RO system as an insurance policy for your family’s health — peace of mind in every glass.I

How to Choose the Right System

When I walk my clients through this process, we usually start with these questions:

  • Whole-house or just the kitchen? Most families choose an under-sink system for drinking and cooking water, but whole-house systems are great if you’re on a well or have big water concerns.

  • Tank or tankless?Tank systems are reliable and budget-friendly but take up more cabinet space. Tankless is sleeker and filters water on demand (no stale water sitting around!).

  • Air gap or non-air gap faucet? Some states require air gap faucets — they keep dirty water from backing up into the system if your sink ever clogs.

  • Faucet style and finish.Yes, this matters! You want that cute little secondary faucet to match your kitchen design.

  • Extra features.Want instant hot, cold or even sparkling water? Yep — that’s an option too.

Here's some of the brands on the market today. Plentry of styles and finishes to choose from.

My Best Tip

If you feel overwhelmed, start simple: head to Build.com, choose the faucet style you love for your kitchen and then choose the system that pairs with it. And always double-check your state’s plumbing codes before you buy.

Ready to Make the Switch?

If this has been on your mind, know that clean, great-tasting water can transform not just your kitchen but your everyday routines. Imagine cooking, brewing coffee, or filling your kids’ water bottles knowing exactly what’s in every sip.

I dive even deeper into this topic in Episode 9 of my podcast, where I share real-life tips, brand options, and what to consider before you buy.
