If you’ve ever wandered through a cabinet showroom (or down a Pinterest rabbit hole), you know just how overwhelming this part of remodeling can feel. Cabinets are the biggest decision you’ll make in your kitchen and they’re not cheap. But here’s the good news, once you know what to look for, it’s way less scary and a lot more fun.
.
Over the years, I’ve helped so many homeowners make this choice, and I’ve picked up a few lessons worth sharing. So, grab your coffee (or maybe something stronger) and let’s dive in.

#1 Know Your Tiers
Cabinets fall into three main categories: stock, semi-custom, and custom.
Stock is ready-to-go and easy on the budget, but your choices are limited.
Semi-custom (my sweet spot) gives you flexibility with finishes, depths, and colors without the full custom price tag.
Custom is like designing furniture for your home, it’s stunning, but also the most expensive and takes the longest.
Most kitchens I design hit the semi-custom sweet spot, affordable, but still special.
#2 Look for Quality, Not Just Pretty
I always tell clients don’t be fooled by a glossy finish. What matters is what’s underneath. Plywood boxes are the only way to go... steer clear of particleboard. Dovetail drawers will outlast stapled ones. And soft-close hinges? Trust me, you’ll thank yourself everyday for that upgrade.
#3 Budget Reality Check
Here’s where most homeowners gasp... cabinets usually eat up 30% of your remodel budget. Yep, they’re a big deal. Planning ahead saves the shock value later. Here's what you need to know:
Stock runs $70–$250 per linear foot
Semi-custom $150–$500 per linear foot
Custom $500+/ft.
My tip? Splurge where you’ll live the most (like the kitchen),and save in guest baths or laundry rooms.

#4 CHOOSE TIMELESS STYLES
Trends come and go, but your cabinets will be with you for years. Shaker doors are my go-to for versatility. Slab doors bring sleek modern vibes. Inset doors? Gorgeous and furniture-like, but pricier. I love to keep the main kitchen timeless and let the fun happen on an island or bar.
#5 MIX AND MATCH
Here’s a secret, you don’t have to pick just one. I’ve helped clients mix stock and semi-custom in one room or throughout the house. It saves money and makes your home look layered and intentional. Win-win! At the end of the day, cabinets are more than storage — they’re the backbone of your remodel. Choose them thoughtfully and they’ll pay you back in beauty and function every single day.
